Beyond the Backpack is SoFete’s youth engagement and education advancement program dedicated to rekindling the village spirit around our children. Through storytelling, cultural history, mentorship, identity exploration, and community connection, the program helps young people build confidence, understand their heritage, and feel supported early.

Beyond the Backpack is SoFete’s youth engagement and education advancement program created to support young people beyond the classroom. Through mentorship, storytelling, cultural history, literacy, identity exploration, civic engagement, essential student support, and community connection, the program helps rebuild the village around our children.
Many young people are trying to grow, learn, and find their place without enough consistent support. They may receive school supplies, but still need guidance, encouragement, emotional support, cultural pride, safe spaces, and access to everyday essentials that help them stay focused and stable.
For students, especially those living away from home, success is not only about academics. Access to hygiene products, dorm essentials, food support, transportation help, laundry items, school supplies, and small emergency resources can make student life more manageable.
Beyond the Backpack responds by providing practical support, mentorship, community-centered learning, and experiences that help youth understand who they are and what they can become.
OUR GOAL
To engage youth early, strengthen cultural identity, support literacy and emotional resilience, and rebuild a true sense of community around the next generation. This program helps young people develop pride in who they are, understand where they come from, and build the confidence to lead, create, and contribute to their communities.

— Families looking for community-centered youth programming
— Young people exploring identity, heritage, literacy, and leadership
